Racial Trauma and the Colonial Mentality

Participants will learn foundational racial trauma concepts. We will particularly explore acculturation, the colonial mentality, and internalized racism; these are all struggles that your BIPOC clients may have experienced or be experiencing. We will discuss the division that may occur among BIPOC due to the colonial mentality, which is absolutely compounded by issues of class, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability.

Learning Objectives

Learners will be able to define 4 key concepts of racial trauma psychoeducation: racial trauma, acculturation, colonial mentality, and internalized racism.
Learners will be able to explain how these concepts impact their BIPOC clients.
Learners will be able to list the CORT Framework as a model of racial trauma, and share this with their clients.

About the speaker

Sheila Ciminera, LCSW

Sheila Ciminera, LCSW is a social worker and owner of To Bear Witness Therapy. She began her career 20 years ago as a punk kid working in syringe exchange, and has been a proud harm reductionist ever since. She has had the privilege of being a case manager, program developer, individual and group therapist, clinical supervisor, acudetox specialist, professor, and trainer. Her primary focus is supporting helping professionals with compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. She also specializes in working with individuals dealing with trauma, addictions, and justice involvement- all through the lens of a trauma-informed care, anti-oppression, and anti-racist framework. She loves animals (particularly her two pitties), reading, art, photography, punk rock, memes, and retail therapy.
