Emma Kupferman, MSW, LICSW, LCSW-C (she/her) started her career in social work after earning a MSW from Howard University in 2004. Her previous work focused on trauma recovery for survivors of domestic violence and sexual trauma, including serving as the Clinical Supervisor for Rape Abuse Incest National Network’s (RAINN) hotline for military survivors and as the Clinical Director of District Alliance for Safe Housing (DASH), the largest provider of housing for survivors in the District of Columbia. She has presented and trained locally, nationally and internationally including regularly for the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence, at the 3rd World Conference of Women’s Shelters at The Hauge, Netherlands, at the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists 49th Annual Conference and for University of Maryland School of Social Work Continuing Education Department on sexual health and treating sexual dysfunction. Currently she teaches at University of Maryland’s school of Social Work and sees individuals and partners through her private sex therapy practice as an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist. Specializing in ethical non-monogamy, kink and BDSM, gender exploration, body positivity and general sexual wellness, she values supporting all clients in creating the intimate lives they most want. Her practice is grounded in the belief that healing our sexual self is liberation work.
Emma lives in Baltimore where she loves murder mysteries, puzzles, volunteering with the Baltimore Abortion Fund, napping, her stupendous friends and family and Spa World.
Dismantling Anti-Fatness in the Therapy Space
While many therapists feel aligned theoretically with body positivity, clients will still feel the impact of direct and indirect messages of fatphobia within their relationship with their therapist. Fat people are socialized to feel shame about their body size, told to take up less space and are presented everyday with societal messages of disgust, along with demands that they address the problem of their fatness.
